Still smarting after their May Kelly Cup loss, Macquarie routed Pirates for 81 in their first innings after Paul Stait won the toss and elected to bat first.
In reply, Macquarie claimed first innings before they were bundled out for 198 with Fraser Carroll and Sam Johnson scoring half centuries after the Macca were 4-7 in reply.
Ethan Hyde (23) and Chris Cole (30) all contributed valuable runs after Pirates had clawed their way back into the contest.
A frustrated Stait said it was one of those days.
“If you moved a fielder, the ball went where he came from,” he said. “It was just an unlucky day for us.”
Sam Ward was the best of the Macquarie bowlers, finishing with 6-20 off 12.3 overs, while Cole (2-26 off nine) and Brendan Badenoch (2-21 off 11) were also amongst the wickets.
