The $10,000 funding boost will help deliver the Holyoake Drumbeat Program, a specifically designed project targeting young men aged between 13 years and 15 years.
While the target group is specific, NSW operations manager with each which auspices headspace Jenny Sinclair says the program is open to anyone aged 12 years through to 25.
“This is a hands-on, fun and upbeat program,” Ms Sinclair said.
“Former community liaison officer Tracie Hazell was instrumental in getting this program up and running after she realised there was a real need for this type of activity in the community.
“We are in regular contact with the some 450 to 500 young people who come through our doors at headspace while we are also working closely with schools and groups such as the Biripai Lands Council and elders to further identify gaps within the community for such programs.
“The funding for the Holyoake Durmbeat Program covers staff training, purchasing 10 drum kits and the lessons.
“However, the program is more about building self-esteem and self-confidence and helping engage young people,” Ms Sinclair said.
Compass Financial Management’s Warwick Affleck helped secure the funding through the FPA’s Future2Foundation. He is also an ambassador for headspace.
“This program will focus on different relationship themes during the 10 week course including, low self esteem, identity and social responsibilities, values, dealing with emotions, peer pressure, harmony and community and team work,” he said.
“Importantly, headspace Port Macquarie will focus on building the capacity of the participants so that they can continue to use the skills and techniques taught beyond the boundaries of the drumbeat program.
“This program will focus on giving the individuals and community members the opportunity to develop abilities that they can use in their personal lives.”
