According to the Port Macquarie to Coffs Harbour Pacific Highway quarterly project update, the traffic change will allow all highway traffic to travel on the new upgraded lanes for a total of about 19 kilometres between the Oxley Highway and Kempsey.
One lane will run in each direction on the new southbound lanes.
Cassie Allan, the communications manager for the Kundabung to Kempsey stretch of highway, said that the new lanes should eliminate 60 kph speed zones in the area.
Ms Allan said that the traffic switch could potentially be done on Wednesday, December 14, but it was heavily dependent on weather conditions.
The Kundabung to Kempsey developments come as major works have finished on a new bridge across the Wilson River as part of the Oxley Highway to Kundabung section of the Pacific Highway upgrade.
The Australian Government is providing $542.41 million and the New South Wales Government $277.59 million toward the Oxley Highway to Kundabung section of the Pacific Highway upgrade, which is part of the jointly funded $3.3 billion to upgrade 105 kilometres of Pacific Highway between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour.
The remaining 57 kilometres of the 105 kilometre highway upgrade between Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour is expected to progressively open to traffic in 2017, weather permitting.
