Card-making suppliers Alice in Paperland came up with the idea and the public response was fantastic, and the company’s Alice Totonjian says they will now do it every Christmas.
“We did it to make Christmas a little bit happier for nursing home residents who don’t have family or visitors over the festive season,” she said.
The cards will go to nursing homes in Port Macquarie, Wauchope and Kempsey and if any home not included wants cards, they can contact Alice in Paperland on 65815663.
The firm held a workshop and 30 volunteers turned up on Saturday December 3, and made 400 cards.
“We had 28 women and two young men, from the Rural Fire Service. It was really exciting to see them.
“They’d never made a card before, but we had teachers and experienced card-makers on hand, and I really felt the community spirit,” said Alice.
Lots of people who couldn’t make it but had created cards at home sent them in.
It’s the first time the company has done this, and it was so successful that they’re going to do it very year. Alice loves working with the elderly.
“Christmas is a very emotional time, and receiving a hand-made card is very special,” she said.
