Speaking live on his Thursday breakfast slot, Peter said goodbye to listeners at 2Way FM, which broadcasts throughout the Hastings and is staffed and run by volunteers.
His mother, Mary Saville, who’s 78, has also resigned as a presenter there.
Peter joined 2Way FM as a 14-year-old and over the past 24 years, he’s served on the committee, been president and been the technical manager. He said he was very sorry to leave.
“Radio, just like newspapers, is going through a big change, because people can get the same service on their smart phones.
“Community radio has to be relevant. It can’t be a music station any more. Its role is to communicate with people and the area about things that are happening.
“They need to actively engage with community organisations and involve the community in the operation of the services, and get more feedback,” he said.
2Way FM president, Liz Fassen said that Peter had been involved for many years as a presenter and had done technical things.
“He has been rather busy over the past few months, so the committee decided to rearrange the help, because we are all volunteers, and to get three people to do the technical side.
“He didn’t have time to spend. We understand. He has his own business and he’s only 39,” she said.
Ms Fassen said the committee didn’t expect Peter to resign as a presenter.
“We asked him to stay on as a presenter but he didn’t want to do that. He was quite a popular presenter on the Thursday breakfast show. We are disappointed that he didn’t stay on,” she added.
The station is based in Wauchope, and broadcasts all over the Hastings.
