The service club has a long history of supporting the hospital, including $25,000 towards the Wandering Path in the Acute Geriatric Evaluation and Management (AGEM) Unit, patient resources in the Renal Unit, providing barbecue lunches at community events at the hospital and now its third mobile bookcase which allows patients to borrow novels, and return them, with ease.
The bookcases are located throughout the hospital, on the first and second floors.
Port Macquarie Pink Ladies Vice-President Lesley Watts said she never ceased to be amazed at the club’s generosity.
“All it takes is a phone call and the Tacking Point Lions Club is there to help,” Mrs Watts said.
“Their generosity, particularly with these amazing mobile book trolleys, goes a long way to helping patients have a more comfortable stay while in hospital.
“We love to receive donated books from the community which can be enjoyed again and again through our mobile library – a service that quite simply wouldn’t be as convenient and accessible without the support of the Lions.”
“It’s a free service for patients, visitors and staff. All we ask is that the books are eventually returned for others to read.”
The club’s secretary Kathy Moonen said it was a pleasure to be able to support the Pink Ladies and patients again.
“There’s a bit involved with these bookcases because they have to be sourced from an accredited manufacturer due to them going into a hospital setting,” Mrs Moonen said.
“The feedback we’ve received after the other two bookcases were donated has been fantastic.
“The books are being borrowed - patients and staff are enjoying the service so it was a great opportunity to expand it even further.
“On a nice sunny day, it’s great to see people in the courtyard enjoying a good read in the fresh air.”
