The Port Macquarie building is situated on crown land, owned and managed by the state government.
A NSW Department of Industry - Lands spokesperson said design works for the new structure are underway and will result in a regenerated fisherman’s wharf.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council mayor Peter Besseling said the exhibited plans related to the Kooloonbung Creek foreshore were finalised and approved by council after the demolition of the Co-op was ordered.
“Councillors felt it was important to secure pedestrian access along the foreshore area, given the fate of the Co-op and the uncertain future of the Plaza Car Park site,” he said.
“The plan allows for a kiosk or cafe located near the current site, which leaves open opportunities for future fish sales on the site.”
Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams said a $110,000 demolition contract was awarded to Deklax.
The process involves removing the building, the concrete slab, the concrete piers, the timber wharf and supporting beams.
The DPI-Lands spokesperson said the contractor is expected to take five weeks to complete the works, weather dependent.
Mrs Williams said the Port Macquarie foreshore is an important public space.
“The former Co-op building and associated wharf structure at Hastings River is not suitable to retain due to its poor condition, so demolition of the building and wharf is the first step towards regenerating the site for community use,” she said.
Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce president Hadyn Oriti said the board will continue to work with the state government and council to support development.
