Many trolleys have been dumped in alley ways, bushes, car parks and even water ways around Port Macquarie, impacting on the beautiful Mid North Coast environment.

A Settlement City spokesperson said the centre works closely with retailers and council regarding trolley management.

“Our major retailers own and manage the trolleys and local contractors can be contacted by the community to collect abandoned trolleys,” the spokesperson said.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Director Matt Rogers said shopping trolley collection is the responsibility of both retailers and their customers.

“Council is working with retailers to ensure they regularly collect trolleys left in public places,” Mr Rogers said.

“Shopping trolleys represent a major investment by retailers and customers use this convenience on a daily basis.”

Mr Rogers said that abandoned shopping trolleys impacts the visual amenity of waterways and surroundings, and are a nuisance and potential hazard when dumped in public places. 

 “A safe and attractive place is important to all of us,” he said.

“In the case of persistent offenders, Council Rangers will impound abandoned shopping trolleys and retailers will be required to pay an impounding fee of $56 before the trolley is released.”

Council encourages the community to report stray trolleys so they can be promptly collected by their owners.

Trolley Tracker provides a collection service so the trolleys can be returned quickly to their retailers. 

The community can report lost trolleys by calling 1800 641 497, seven days a week.
