Port Macquarie-Hastings Council has secured almost $6 million from the state government towards construction of sewerage and wastewater treatment works at Telegraph Point, Long Flat and Comboyne.

The council would make a major contribution to the construction work.

Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peter Besseling said the matter would go before a council meeting and the councillors’ views would be taken on board once gain.

Cr Besseling said he was confident it would be all systems go given the past work and securing of the state government funding.

The council previously made a commitment to deliver the schemes.

Oxley MP Melinda Pavey and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams welcomed the state government project funding to the three village areas.

“This funding will help transition the existing but aged waste-disposal systems over to best-practice and latest technology sewerage schemes,” Mrs Pavey said.

Mrs Williams said the community growth over time had outstripped the capacity of the existing systems, so these large-scale infrastructure projects would be an enormous benefit to the districts into the future.

The state government announced $2.5 million to upgrade the Comboyne sewerage system, $1.17 million to the Long Flat sewerage scheme and $2.32 million towards the Telegraph Point sewerage scheme.

The state government funding is drawn from the $110 million Regional Water and Wastewater Backlog Program.

More than 30 projects across the state were approved in a review process against strict criteria.

The backlog program meets part of the capital cost of each project, while the local water utility and/or council contributes funding for the balance of the capital cost and all operations and maintenance costs.

The Restart NSW funding, delivered under the Regional Water and Wastewater Backlog Program, is earmarked for regional infrastructure projects.

The funding helps to clear a backlog of projects in country towns with ongoing water quality and sewerage problems.

The council has finalised design and construction drawings for the schemes as part of continued planning.
