Earlier this year, Joey's House Early Education Centre wanted to recruit a support worker, but even after consulting with an external rehabilitation agency they were not able to identify an ideal candidate.
Centacare stepped in and with the support St Agnes’ Parish staff, Nichole Tassell (Human Resources Adviser), Wendy Ward (St Joseph’s Family Services Director) and Laurran's service worker for the Transition to Work Program, John Talamaivao, they identified Laurran as a possible candidate for a position and an interview was scheduled.
With John by her side, Laurran breezed through the interview and secured her first paid job.
The Transition to Work program helped Laurran gain confidence, independence and develop skills the necessary in the workplace. With the program’s simulated interviews, social outings, morning job searches and health and fitness days, Laurran gained the courage to pursue her career.
“I was quite nervous, but also confident. I have always wanted to work somewhere I was helping people, whether that was child care or aged care” Laurran said
.As a support worker, Laurran follows a schedule that lists duties for her to do and what time they need to be done. The program includes assisting with cleaning, restocking materials and assisting the Educators when needed.
Into the future, Laurran is also hoping to pursue a qualification in early education or community services. The Transition to Work program will continue to assist the progression of her career and also further develop her workplace skills and confidence.
Furthermore, her colleagues at Joey’s House cannot be happier with the work that Laurran is doing. Laurran always follows her program with no complaints or issues and comes into work with a big smile.
“Laurran is a god-send; we are all so thankful that she is with us. Every day she comes in, so bright and happy, we couldn’t ask for anything more” Heather Unicomb said, Joey’s House Education Centre Coordinator.
