Banting experienced all the emotions in his second round heat with David de Carmo, Ricardo Christie and Leandro Usuna.
The Port Macquarie product won his heat with a score of 13.20 ahead of de Carmo’s 12.67.
Banting’s father, Lenny, said conditions were challenging.
“From the beach it looked six foot and really good, but Matt said it was lumpy and bumpy,” he said.
“There was two swells out there and I heard a couple of the winners when they came back in said they almost felt lost at sea out there.
“The odd decent wave came in and Matt got one at the end.”
Banting’s third round encounter with Tanner Gaudaskas, Maxime Huscenoct and Brett Simpson is scheduled for Thursday night, weather conditions permitting.
