Speight featured in five games for the ACT Brumbies this year before switching to the sevens program thanks to a flexible contract offered by the Australian Rugby Union.

A knee injury threatened to curtail Speight's Olympic dream altogether, however he returned in time to get on the plane with the Australian team despite not playing any matches in Rio.

The Fijian-born 28-year-old is now back in the Wallabies set-up, gearing up for a possible battle with the Springboks in Pretoria on Saturday.

Asked what his future sevens aspirations were, Speight said: "Probably it'd be a bit unrealistic to go for another Olympics but, in saying that, I think that most of those boys would be aiming for the 2018 Commonwealth Games and being hosted by Australia that will be good to have a few big names going back into sevens knowing that we're hosting to try and make gold in that."

The players Speight is referring to are Cam Clark and Michael Wells, two of the Waratahs' newest signings for 2017 and accomplished sevens players for Australia in recent years.

Speight is more than happy to work on finding the form that saw him line up for Australia at the World Cup and believes the sevens experiment was definitely worthwhile.

"The transition has been pretty good," Speight said. "The experience was definitely worthwhile, being with the sevens for the year. I can say that I really took a lot out of that and can't thank the Australian sevens program enough. Coming back, the body's in good nick. The transition hasn't been too hard, which is pretty good. Happy to be back in the fold and in the Wallabies camp and hopefully I can get a run.

"It was really refreshing in a way after six or seven seasons in Super Rugby. I've been better for it fitness-wise and also physically and mentally. You have to be quite mentally strong to go through the training. It's definitely been worthwhile."

Speight said he planned on catching up with South African sevens players Juan de Jongh and Francois Hougaard during the week before a possible battle against each other at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday night in which the Springboks will be looking to break a three-game losing streak.

"We always kept in touch, we caught up again in Brisbane," Speight said. "They've benefited from the experience as well and it's good to see them medal. It'll be a good clash if we go against them this weekend. They're staying around the corner so we'll catch up for a coffee or something. I think there will be a bit of banter over coffee."

Speight just missed out a week-and-a-half ago in Perth on playing his first match for the Wallabies since the Uruguay match in the World Cup.

He has jumped ahead of Drew Mitchell in the pecking order but knows starting wingers Dane Haylett-Petty and Reece Hodge have been in pretty good touch.

The Wallabies will announce their bench on Friday.

"They've been going pretty well, Hodgey and Dane," Speight said. "Quality players and for us we're biding our time and if we get a chance we'll make the most of it. But, in saying that, there's healthy competition in the outside backs, which is good. It brings out the best in us and it's good to have Sefa [Naivalu] eligible as well. We'll push hard in training and push the two starting wingers. We're pretty keen to get a chance.

As for what the Springboks will bring to the table, Speight said: "They'll have that bit of pride on the line and a good home crowd to go with. They'll be a different beast this weekend and we'll have to make sure we're on our game."
