Perhaps the most significant of these was the Design Excellence Award (overall design of the year), which was presented to designer and director James Collins.
It was for a property at Thrumster dubbed ‘The Grange – Chameleon’.
They partnered with local building company, Shipway Constructions, who also won awards for the same property at the HIA Northern NSW Housing and Kitchen and Bathroom Awards for 2016, including Northern NSW Home of the Year.
Mr Collins was thrilled to win the awards and said he never expected such recognition.
“It’s an understatement to say I was over the moon after receiving them,” he said.
“I just couldn’t believe it. It is an honour to receive these awards.”
He said to win the BDAA Design Excellence Award and the HIA Northern NSW Home of the Year is an amazing feeling.
“For that house to be my family home is even more incredible,” he said.
“Working with my wife on the design, the products and the interior finishes was the hardest but most rewarding project I have worked on.
“The home wouldn’t be what it is today without her support and tough decision making with colours and finishes.”
Edward Riddle, executive officer of the BDAA, said Collins W Collins was a worthy winner.
“BDAA’s jury panel were unanimous in their rating of the entry and commented that the design shows thought and respect to the site constraints along with the occupants’ ideals,” he said.
“Everything about this home focuses on lifestyle and seamless integration between the indoors and outdoors. It is truly one with nature.”
