Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, regional airline JETGO and Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce shared that message at a September 27 chamber lunch.
JETGO will link Port Macquarie and Melbourne’s Essendon Airport from November 7.
JETGO regional sales manager Ian Greenwood said the service would begin four days a week.
“As time progresses and we do see the results, we will be in a position to increase that,” he said.
“The plan is to operate a daily service.”
He told the Port News that JETGO was here to stay.
“We have a fabulous jet service non-stop down to Melbourne – use it,” Mr Greenwood said.
Port Macquarie Airport business enterprise manager Gayleen Burley encouraged the community to get on board too.
“We’ve known for a long time that the Port Macquarie community, for both business and leisure, was after the Melbourne market and we’ve been working hard to secure services to the Melbourne market,” she said.
“We are very pleased and excited about the opportunities JETGO will provide to the Port Macquarie community.”
Melbourne is a popular destination and that is before the direct service takes off in November.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council group manager economic development Liesa Davies acknowledged the airport was a critical piece of infrastructure for economic development.
Ms Davies spoke about the tourism and business opportunities flowing from the new direct Melbourne flights.
Port Macquarie Chamber of Commerce president Hadyn Oriti said the new air service was a real opportunity for Port Macquarie and he commended everyone to make the most of it.
