Fatal Accident – On Friday last, a fatal accident occurred to a teamster named Otho Aude Hastings Smith, who was engaged at his customary calling at Black Creek, Camden Haven. He was in the bush with his bullock team, had tracked a log, and was proceeding home with it, when by some mischance the truck and log capsized, and fell upon the unfortunate man. The wheels of the truck lurched in a hole and the conveyance and its load turned completely over, and pinned Smith to the ground face downwards. Deceased was a single man, and a son of Mr H Smith who was killed by a similar accident on the same road some fifteen months ago.
Enlisted - Mr Val Dick, son of Mr and Mrs W. B. Dick, of Port Macquarie, has enlisted. This makes the third son in the family to don khaki.
Registration of Dogs - Sergeant Wilkinson wishes it to be known that the 14 days’ grace allowed owners to register their dogs expires on October 14, next.
Rawdon Island Patriotic Races - We would draw attention to the program, published in this issue, of the various events to be run off at the Rawdon Island patriotic races on October 7, next. The proceeds will be donated to the Wauchope Returned Soldiers’ Fund. Admission will be I shilling 6 sixpence, and the races will commence at 12 o’clock.
Soldiers’ Pads - For the last few weeks the Red Cross ladies have met in the Town Hall, the principal work being the making of pads for the soldiers. The result is a credit to them, as no less than 100 of different sizes have been finished, and are ready to be sent away. As these pads are very necessary in the hospitals, every Tuesday, afternoon is to be devoted to this work, and those who care to come and help will be welcome.
New Banking Premises - The business of the Commercial Banking Company of Sydney, conducted since its inauguration in Port Macquarie 29 years ago in what are known as Litchfield’s premises, was transferred on Monday last to the imposing new building just erected in Horton Street. The contractor, Mr W Condon has not yet completed his work, but the offices in which the main business of the bank will be transacted are sufficiently advanced to admit of occupation, and customers will find it a pleasure to meet the officials of the bank in a roomy and imposing building. The transition is very marked, and the whole surroundings are both magnetic and pleasing. The building should be handed over complete in the course of a few weeks.
Anzac Entertainment - There was a full house on Friday night to welcome the Anzac entertainers to Port Macquarie. The performers are all rattling good fellows, who formed part of the noble army who stormed the rugged heights of Gallipoli, and won undying fame for Australia. Needless to say, they are all branded, and the brands exemplify the fierceness of the struggle they passed through. The concert program was a varied one, alternating between the gay and the sad, and each performance was well worth listening to. The soldiers were under no expense whatever during their stay here, their board and all expenses being defrayed by some of our townsmen.
