Mayoral candidate Peta Pinson says her privatised business view on how council can improve on its delivery to the community is key to her decision to run for the top job.
With ratepayers going to the polls on September 10, Ms Pinson pointed to her entrepreneurial background and focus on innovative solutions as positive attributes required for the mayoral role.
A Wauchope resident of 25 years, Ms Pinson established Stabilcorp Pty Ltd, a specialised road pavement repair and maintenance company, four years ago. It operates from the Wauchope industrial area.
“Stabilcorp has won multi awards including a Queensland government encouragement award, we were finalists in the innovation for road safety with the Australian Road Safety Foundation and finalists in the good design awards in Sydney.
“We’ve also recently received an Australian business award for Stabilcorp.”
The awards add to her track record in leadership, innovation and working in a team environment.
“By standing for mayor I am showing my intention to inform the community about what is actually happening within the walls of council.
“I certainly do not believe that I am above anyone. I work in my own team environment,” she said.
However, Ms Pinson said she was aware of the need to ensure operational matters remained the domain of the general manager.
“Council staff address matters in a certain way. I can look at that (process) and form an opinion if it is the best value for money for the community.
“It is up to the general manager to direct staff … but as a collective group of councillors I would also help lead that conversation.”
Ms Pinson said she was standing as a mayoral candidate only because she felt this was the only way she could promote effective change.
“I have followed the last four years of council and have formed an opinion of council that I would not be able to implement the required change as a councillor.
“This is about leading the community,” she said.
The mayoral candidate also squashed feedback that she was ‘somehow a political stooge for The Nationals’.
“Some people think that I am affiliated with The Nationals – I am not a member and not affiliated with The Nationals,” she said.
“I have my own mind and do my own research and then act on that.”
