Last weekend they sent a group of six boxers to the Australian Golden Gloves in Brisbane and emerged with two gold and one silver medal.
Scott Chessells finished with a 100 per cent winning record after going through three tough super heavyweight bouts.
The first and third went down to the wire and were determined by points.
In the second bout, a heavy blow 10 seconds into the first round stunned his opponent who never recovered. The fight was stopped in the second round.
Chessells said he enjoyed his first experience at a national level.
“There’s still a lot of room to improve,” he said.
“We’ll sit down with the coaches and see what’s on next.”
He said his fiancee was not only happy for him to win the title, but to do it with barely a scratch.
“I’m getting married in a couple of weeks, so she was happy I didn’t end up with any marks on my face,” he said.
Phakphai won the 66-kilogram junior title.
“The level was like nothing I’ve seen before,” he said.
The teenager’s result didn’t surprise coach Dean Groth.
“Darm’s a talent; I knew he’d go well,” he said.
“The way people are talking about him is sounding like he’s headed for big things and he’s recently been accepted into the NSW development squad.”
After Jessica Messina took home a silver medal, Groth was confident the current hot streak for the club would continue.
“It’s hard to believe we’re having this consistent level of success,” he said.
“At the moment, Port Macquarie is a powerhouse and has a long, successful future ahead.”
The focus now shifts towards the NSW state titles in March which is the first step for Commonwealth Games selection.
Chessells felt he was now at a level to pursue selection for Gold Coast 2018.
“After the experience this weekend I might have a chase of the Commonwealth Games,” he said.
“Prior to last weekend I didn’t know if I was at that level yet, but now I know I am and can push further.”
