The appointment of Mr Neild as a public defender is a major boost for justice on the mid-north coast and will help reduce the amount of time before criminal matters come to trial in the area, said Member for Port Macquarie Leslie Williams.
Mr Neild has worked on complex criminal cases, including matters involving white collar crime and murder.
During a legal career spanning more than 20 years, Mr Neild has practised almost exclusively in the criminal jurisdiction as counsel and Prosecutor for the Commonwealth Director of Public Prosecutions.
Since being called to the Bar in 2004, he has appeared as counsel in a wide range of criminal matters, including Supreme and District Court trials and appeals to the Criminal Court of Appeal.
He has lectured criminal law at the University of NSW and has been a member of the NSW Bar Association’s Professional Conduct Committee since 2014.
He will commence working as a public defender on September 5. Mr Neild will appear in serious criminal matters for clients who have been granted legal aid or clients of the Aboriginal Legal Service NSW/ACT.
