Housemate Ninja is the two year-long vision of mother-of-two Kellee Morgan and is now being trialled in Port Macquarie before being launched onto the Australian market.
And initial response suggests the app has a bright future.
Ms Morgan was recently named the winner of the first ever Edmund Barton Centre pitching competition and Housemate Ninja was recognised nationally as one of the Anthill Smart 100 Innovation Awards Top 100.
“The Edmund Barton Centre start up program really helped me through the highs and lows and the whole concept of starting a business from scratch,” Ms Morgan said.
Despite having a business and marketing degree, Mrs Morgan said the process has been a massive learning curve but she has gained support from the online community and also connections with some Brisbane start-ups.
The idea for the app came after talking with a local family who wanted to rent a spare room but had some reservations because of their children.
“They wanted to be comfortable with the person they chose but renting a room out can sometimes be a bit of a gamble.
“This app, and it’s the first of its kind in Australia, helps make connections at the social level via a series of questions and drop down boxes.
“The eight questions take about two minutes to complete although you must also create a profile and your ideal match based on criteria including room preference and budget."
While targeting a younger audience, Ms Morgan said she is aware that finding a housemate crosses a number of age categories.
Ms Morgan is looking for about 50 people to use the app – and there’s a free pizza for those initially involved.
Housemate Ninja has also launched a crowdfunding Pozible campaign, which offers exclusive merchandise from Housemate Sticky Notes to Tea Towels, and 25% of all pledges are donated to support homeless and disadvantaged youths with Youth Off The Streets.
The funds raised will cover pledge rewards and assist with a national marketing campaign to help maximise the exposure of the app.
For locals who need to find a room or who have a spare room to rent and would like to help provide feedback and be the first to use the app before national release contact Kellee on hello@housemateninja.com for an exclusive invite.
