The work will be undertaken by Council contractor Suez over a four week period commencing August 8, making use of a relatively new technology known as ice pigging.
The cleaning process involves semi-solid ice slurry being pumped into a section of water main, which is then pushed along the pipe using the natural pressure in the network. As the ice flows through the pipe, it passes over every surface and collects sediment or wipes biofilm as it passes.
Ice pigging is considered quicker and more effective than traditional flushing techniques. It also uses 50 percent less water, with the sediment-laden ice being disposed of responsibly.
The process is also quicker than traditional cleaning methods, with interruption to water supply for residents being relatively low. Very little flushing of the mains is normally required after ice pigging, with water quality tending to be very good.
Council will be writing to impacted residents advising of the time and duration of planned water supply interruptions, providing at least 24 hours notice before the work is carried out.
