It was on that date 20 years ago that the school officially opened. They completed the last term of 1996, with 1997 being their first full year.
To celebrate, the school’s P&C are selling engraved pavers to anyone who would like to purchase them, particularly those who have been to the school.
The committee will create a sensory garden to house the pavers, that will begin construction in roughly eight weeks time.
Two teachers remain from the school’s first year. They are Angie Reichelt and Fiona Kars.
Both have fond memories of the past two decades, and said they look forward to 20 years more.
“I’ve been here for four principals, have seen a lot of new buildings and also a lot of children,” Angie said.
“It’s been special to see the growth and to see where the school is at now. When I first arrived, I knew it was the perfect school to settle down at.”
Likewise for Fiona, she found a home tucked away just meters from Lighthouse Beach, in the heart of a wonderful community.
“It’s very exciting just to think that we have been here as a school for twenty years,” she said.
“The growth within the school has been the biggest change. It’s a very popular and happy place to work.”
Current principal Phil Harris, who arrived from Sydney last year, said the strong reputation and school community was the highlight of Tacking Point Public.
“The school has been blessed with wonderful principals before me and I’m lucky to have been given the role,” he said.
“You can see after 20 years all the different visions are accumulating.
“We have a strong selection of motivated and dynamic staff members who are leading the school into a new chapter, and into the 21st century.”
Deputy principal Kelly Jordan said that the school excelled from all aspects.
“From the academic to the cultural, including all the arts, through to the sporting as well, the school excels,” she said.
“I absolutely love working here and our community base is extraordinary. The relationship between the staff, students and Port Macquarie community is second to none.”
