In 2014, a man contacted police to report he had been sexually assaulted on a number of occasions as a seven-year-old boy in 1976 by a neighbour in Port Macquarie.
Detectives from Mid North Coast Local Area Command have conducted extensive inquiries since then.
About 9.45am Tuesday detectives arrested a 69-year-old man near his home at Carrington, Newcastle.
The former tennis coach was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was charged with two counts of buggery.
He was granted conditional bail to appear at Port Macquarie Local Court on Wednesday, September 7.
Police encourage any person who has been a victim of any kind of sexual violence, no matter how long ago the incident occurred, to contact police.
