Port City has raised money each year for the Leukaemia Foundation through the U.G.L.Y Bartender or the World’s Greatest Shave.
This year, the ‘Port City Easties Crew 4 You’ raised $23,000.
They banded together to shave their heads alongside radio personality Mark Strachan and 10 keen locals at the public event.
In just five weeks, the team exceeded their initial fundraising goal of $10,000, and were humbled by the community’s generosity.
Port City Marketing and Club Grants Co-ordinator Katy-Lee Waldron said the foundation reached out to them to see if the club would be interested in being a public shave place for the event.
“A few of us has talked about shaving our heads to raise money for cancer last year so when we received our event shave pack we thought “let’s do this, it’s only hair,” she said.
“After encouraging a few other staff we had seven of us on board including the club’s chairman who lost his little sister to leukaemia.”
Katy-Lee said it was “extremely special” to be recognised and to have had so much help from the town.
“We didn’t expect to raise as much as we have. The community support was incredible,” she said.
“To be in a room with the other top fundraisers and hear the stories of families who were going the tough journey was very emotional.
“I’m very proud of our team and to know that the funds we have raised will help a family with accommodation for their time away from home through treatment means a lot.”
Every day, 35 people will be diagnosed with leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma and related blood disorders and they’ll turn to the Leukaemia Foundation for help.
The Foundation provides personalised care and support to patients and families living with a blood cancer diagnosis.
Port City are more than happy to continue their support each and every year, with the help of the Port Macquarie community.
“We plan to make this an annual event. Next year will be bigger and better,” Mrs Waldron said.
“Save the dates of March 16 to 19, 2017 and join the team of Port City’s Easties Crew 4 You.”
