The boys were really keen and started the game in terrific form with Oliver White-Southcombe, Colin Smith, Cuban Quinlan and Brent Nixon all kicking goals in the first quarter to Byron Bay’s one goal.
Unfortunately, Taj Pryce-Boyle had a heavy fall and injured his arm and was not able to take his place on the field again.
The second quarter saw a closer contest, but the Hastings Secondary College team were able to withstand the challenge and edge slightly further ahead with the score at 44 to 22 at half time.
In the third quarter our team was able to put the game beyond doubt by continuing to apply tackling pressure on the opposition. This resulted in Jordan O’Neill kicking two goals and Brent kicking a third goal for the team for the quarter and the backline led by Lewis Kranitis and Josh Schofield keeping Byron Bay scoreless.
In the final quarter, our team dominated the centre clearance with Jack Terley and Cuban getting many possessions between them and giving the forwards plenty of opportunity to kick goals. Ed Smith and Cuban each kicked goals to take the final score line to 81 to 36.
The team progresses to the top 16 in the state and will play the winner of the North West conference in the near future.

Bronze Merit Awards
Four outstanding Port Macquarie Campus students received the inaugural Bronze Merit Award at Tuesday’s formal assembly. Congratulations to Corey Roughley and Shayla Cullen (Year 10), and to Kirsten Ballard and Holly Kemper (Year 7), who are the first students to be recognised under the new merit awards system the school is trialling.
Nambus mobile museum
The Nambus visited Port Macquarie Campus recently. Vietnam veterans George Dwight and Kerrin Brown from Newcastle invited local Vietnam veterans Greg Walsh, Derek McNeil, Barry Lynch, Peter Page and Roger Mika to join in their presentation to the students. The veterans spoke about their personal experiences when drafted and at basic training before shipping out to the war zone. One said he volunteered to go to Vietnam. Each had a compelling story to tell and the year 10 students, who study the Vietnam War as part of the history syllabus, found their insights and personal journeys fascinating. A few students were drafted for the day. They followed orders, did a parade-ground drill and evacuated a wounded comrade. Afterwards, some students got to dress in army fatigues and handle some objects from the museum.
