The 3.9 metre-high signs feature striking rural landscapes unique to the Camden Haven.

Roads Minister Duncan Gay and Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams launched the first sign on Monday at Moorland.

The Moorland sign features an image of Middle Brother Mountain taken from Hannam Vale Road in north Moorland.

The Johns River sign shows a view of South Brother Mountain and the Kew sign has a vista of the Camden Haven River area from North Brother Mountain.

The iKew Visitor Information Centre coordinator, Garry Walsh, said the signs were a good measure to entice people off the highway.

He said numerous motorists had commented about a lack of signs.

“The spin-off will be people new to the area will spend some money here which will help the accommodation providers and the cafes,” Mr Walsh said.

“It will introduce people to the area.”

Mr Walsh said visitor information centre volunteers could point motorists to other towns in the area and tourists could use the facilities and shops.

The signs, which are a first for the state, complement directional signs along the highway.

Mr Gay said the new signs were outstanding.

He said the signs were designed to bring to life the characteristics of the community and attract visitors.

“We have a professional photographer that has taken really good shots that give a depth of feeling to the area,” Mr Gay said.

The signs were developed in consultation with the communities.

Mrs Williams said the signs told a real story about the communities.

“This is another way to enhance those initiatives already in place,” she said.

Mrs Williams said she had no doubt the bypassed communities would be very pleased with this added measure to remind people about what the communities had to offer.

The signs are designed so the photographs can be changed over time.

The next phase of signs will focus on Bulahdelah, Woolgoolga and Ballina.
