The Lake Cathie resident picked up an achievement award at the annual NSW Gili awards on May 26.
The awards recognise and celebrate the achievements of Indigenous people studying at TAFE NSW.
But the road to the award was rough with Brett leaving school without finishing year 8.
He initially worked as a labourer before decided to pursue a career as a primary school teacher.
Brett completed a Certificate III in Pathways to Further Study at Port Macquarie TAFE campus and his results were so strong he started a University of Newcastle's Bachelor of Primary Education.
