WOW, what a big weekend back at Macquarie Park!
Big scores, tight scores, but most of all great sportsmanship and participation.
Our open's representative team also travelled to Woolgoolga for the finals series of the Regional State League.
Heading in to the finals undefeated, the team was expecting some challenging games as they went head to head with the best in the region. The semi final against Coffs Harbour was a little one-sided as HVNA was able to field a full strength squad with the return of Kellie Mann after her injury.
The final score was 72-26. The second semi was tightly contested between Taree and Woolgoolga. Extra time featured in this game, with Woolgoolga eventually winning 72-67.
After playing extra time in their physical semi final, Woolgoolga were no match for HVNA who skipped to an early half-time lead of 24 - 19. Our girls stepped it up in the second half and finished the game at 60-32.
Coach Jodie Burge was again suitably impressed with the girls commitment to each other, their association and the game.
"What an awesome team. It was very pretty to watch," she said after the game, making reference to the smooth transitions up and down the court.
The 2016 march past was also strongly contested by all five clubs and a small contingent of representative players marching behind the HVNA banner.
It was exciting to see the sea of colour as each club marched proudly, all trying their best to wrestle the trophy from 2015 winners, Port Panthers.
Port Combined have never won a march past, so they were keen to impress.
The cheers were deafening when Port Combined were announced as the 2016 winners.
Our 40's representative team also played in Woolgoolga, reaching the semi-finals in Division 2.
Whilst they lost their semi, they played well and have been improving every week which was their goal.
