THE countdown to the closure of the historic Hastings River Fisherman's Co-operative Ltd is underway.
The iconic site will close its doors on May 31 and the building will be demolished.
Co-op chairman, Paul Hyde, said there was no change to the already announced closure date.
"We are still on track to close the doors on May 31," he said.
"As a Co-op, we will continue to work through all the legal issues that surround the closure and completing all the required paperwork.
"Once we close the doors, there will be no jobs for the staff, and once all the bills are paid, the shareholders will get a dividend and that's it. And local seafood will not be available through the co-op.
"There have been a few conversations involving staff about having a farewell event, but there is nothing decided at this point."
Mr Hyde said some customers 'appeared surprised' that we were still operating.
"There has been plenty of questions to staff since the announcement," he added.
Once the building is vacated, the Department of Primary Industries will resume control and manage the demolition of the co-op building and contribute funds to help the business meet the demolition costs.
