The Settlement Point Ferry was returning from the North Shore with a "fairly full" load shortly after 8am when it got into trouble, according to Cheryllee Wright from Settlement Point's The Point restaurant.
A Port Macquarie-Hastings Council spokesman was unable to explain the interruption to the service, but did confirm the ferry was out of action for six weeks in October and November for scheduled maintenance.
The vessel returned to Settlement Point under its own power about 9.25am on Friday.
Comment has been sought from Port Macquarie-Hastings Council as to the reason for the service interruption, which was still being investigated at 9.40am.
The service was suspended after the tow-back, with Council asking people to use the Hibbard Ferry instead.
