Mobile data is affected as well, including 2G, 3G and 4G services.
The Service Status page at Telstra's website has been showing red lights across the board in all major cities since 12.45pm AEDT, claiming an "interruption" may cause difficulties for some customers.
There were also issues listed for ADSL lines in some regions.
"We are aware if an issue currently affecting mobile voice and data nationally," said Telstra NSW media manager David Taylor.
"We are working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible and thank customers for their patience."
Any Telstra customer should plan ahead to make sure they aren't caught out in need of Google Maps or complex social manoeuvring via text message while they're out and about this afternoon.
Affected customers that need to make an emergency call while their service is interrupted will still be able to do so by dialling '112' instead of 000.
