The $30 million Sancrox interchange is part of the Pacific Highway upgrade between the Oxley Highway and Kempsey.
The interchange, required to enable development in the Sancrox employment precinct, includes local service roads and a bridge over the Pacific Highway at Sancrox, about 600 metres south of the existing Sancrox Road intersection.
A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson said work was continuing on the Sancrox interchange with traffic directed onto new sections of Sancrox Road and Fernbank Creek Road on Monday. Further work will be carried out in coming weeks including landscaping, with the final seal in March next year.
Port Macquarie MP Leslie Williams said it was fantastic to see the Sancrox interchange open to traffic.
"This State and Commonwealth jointly funded project will significantly improve traffic safety by having a separated traffic arrangement to reduce the risk of an accident and importantly will facilitate the expansion of the Sancrox industrial area," Mrs Williams said.
Traffic changes came into effect on Monday.
Lyne MP Dr David Gillespie said this is an important development not only in the overall upgrade of the Pacific Highway but also for the employment precinct which is being developed in the Sancrox area.
"I'd like to thank the local landholders and the NSW government who have come together with the Commonwealth Government to fund the interchange project and look forward to the rollout of the new industrial estate in the months and years ahead," he said.
Negotiations several years ago between Port Macquarie-Hastings Council, landowners, the then Roads and Traffic Authority and the NSW Department of Industry and Investment were pivotal in advancing the overpass project.
Construction company Ferrovial Agroman (Australia) built the interchange.
The Pacific Highway upgrade work will continue in the area with further traffic changes expected as work progresses on the highway.
