A WEEK is a long time in sport and Wauchope RSL captain Matt Day would have been happy with the way his side bounced back against Macquarie Hotel on Saturday.
Leading up to the game Day admitted Macquarie were deservedly competition favourites and his side needed to apply themselves better with bat in hand.
They didn't have to wait long to get a chance to accept the challenge he laid down during the week to his batsmen to be patient and occupy the crease after Michael Pelley won the toss and elected to bowl.
An opening stand between Nathan Lyon and Luke Boxhall provided 23 runs and while Boxhall didn't trouble the scorers Day was happy with his contribution.
"He would have batted for about 10 overs out there and that was pleasing," he said.
"We wanted to put in a better effort and another 50 or 60 would have been nice, but that's cricket."
Lyon finished with 23 before he became the first of Brendan Badenoch's six wickets for the innings.
"There's still room for improvement, but we're heading in the right direction," Day said.
The Wauchope captain was impressed with number three Josh King's performance where he compiled 21 runs.
"He just ran out of partners in the end."
Wauchope were bowled out for 113 in the 43rd over after some late lower-order hitting from Jade Thompson.
In reply Macquarie finished at 2-60 with Ethan Hyde unbeaten on 22 and Josh Hyde on six.
"The two Hyde's are still there and they're big scalps, but we got Coley and he's a big wicket," Day said.
"If we can get two or three quick wickets early next week all of a sudden they could be seven for 70 and it's game on."
Day said his bowlers would need to be patient next weekend and work to plans after "leaking" runs late in the day as they pushed for a late wicket.
"Ideally if they were 30 or 40 it would have been great so it's about getting the ball in the right areas next week," he said.
"We're moving in the right direction, but we might have left our run too late."
