By the end of the day Comboyne was back out in the middle with bat in hand and in trouble again at 3-5 after 10 overs.

Stait claimed four for 17 off 13 overs in the first innings while at the other end Trow took five for four off six overs.

Pirates captain Ben Woodward was extremely happy with his team's performance after they declared their innings closed at 6-67.

"Ideally we won't have to bat again, but we'll try to restrict them as much as we can so we aren't chasing many more than about 60 or 70,” he said.

Trow enjoyed the extra pace and bounce of the Oxley Oval pitch compared to the more batsman-friendly conditions at Wayne Richards Park.

"It was Isaac's first wicket for the season which was pleasing," Woodward said.

"We've been playing on Wayne Richards this season which is a bit slower so it was good for him to have a pitch with some pace and bounce and good carry.”

The Pirates skipper said it was an easy decision to declare once they had secured first innings points.

"We saw an opportunity to get quick wickets because the light and the pitch were deteriorating," he said.

"Once the outfield got some rain on it you couldn't even hit the ball off the square so we thought the benefits of bowling outweighed the negatives and they were playing defensively."

Stait then bowled five overs in the second innings and took one for three as Pirates went in for the kill.

When the two teams return next weekend Woodward was confident, but wary of the difference a week could make to the Oxley Oval pitch.

"Their two best batters are out which is good for us because the pitch could be an absolute belter next weekend," Woodward said.

“It’s good for us to have exposed their middle order especially after it was pretty brittle.

“We'll go with the same formula that worked for us; pitch the ball up and get it swinging."
