Police said the man was driving north along Ocean Drive near MacKillop College on Thursday morning when he allegedly left the road, mounted the curb and careered through a wire fence.
He narrowly avoided a light post and crashed through shrubs before the car came to rest in front of a basketball court fence.
St Paul's assistant principal Adam Kelly was relieved there were no school children around at the time of the accident.
"Thank goodness there was no one harmed," he said.
The man was transported to Port Macquarie Base Hospital by ambulance for mandatory testing.
