PORT City Breakers smashed the Wauchope Blues on Sunday to set up a blockbuster semi final against their rivals the Port Sharks next weekend.
The Breakers were way too good for the Blues in the qualifying final at Lank Bain Complex, winning 46-12 in a match with plenty of feeling.
The Port team overcame some handling errors which they can't afford to make in future rounds of the competition if they are to be successful.
The Breakers muscled up in defence and made up for the ill discipline by forcing plenty of Blues mistakes.
Taylor Ridland, Adrian Daley, Trae Clark and Kurt Lewis scored tries in the first 40 for Breakers. Tom Dooker bagged a double in the second half, while Luke Sinclair and Tristram Morris also found the line.
They could have made 50, but for Richie Roberts knocking the ball on over the line.
A couple of backs made for highlights of the afternoon. Morris capitalised on a Blues knock on to toe the ball ahead and win the race to it in the in goal.
Earlier, Clark's effort was also top notch. Breakers put the ball through the hands after Daley's try, and Clark sprinted down his wing before stopping and stepping inside to score.
Ill feeling crept into the game at times, with Sam Flanagan spending time in the sin bin in the second half after a stoush.
He blew a kiss to the crowd on the way off the ground.
Breakers finished the game with 11 players when they ran out of interchanges as injuries took their toll.
Sean Barrett was forced from the field with a knee injury which initially looked to be serious. Flanagan didn't see out the game.
Roberts dislocated a finger but was able to play on.
Breakers coach Ben Sprague couldn't pick a standout player in the sheds after the match.
"All the forward pack, both halves, my centres, everyone," he said when asked who the best on ground was.
He wasn't too concerned about some handling errors which held Breakers back at times and provided obvious frustration to skipper Daley on the field.
"You've got to expect a little bit of that," he said. "We play an open game. We knuckled down when we had to."
