As we are currently in National Blood Donor Week, the Red Cross Blood Service has paid tribute to our best at an awards night.
Sails Resort hosted the Port Macquarie Donor Recognition Event for the Red Cross Blood Service.
Among the award recipients was Port resident Denis McGrane, who has been giving blood for over 50 years.
He is classed as a milestone donor and has made in excess of 350 donations in Port Macquarie.
"When I was 18 or 19 my only sister had an operation and needed a blood transfusion," Mr McGrane said.
"I thought I'd go to the blood bank and be a donor from then on. I've been a regular donor for some time now."
Mr McGrane says he enjoys doing it and appreciates the friendly atmosphere every time he arrives to roll up his sleeves.
"They relate well to people and really make you feel welcome at the blood bank," he said.
"My mother always said that we have had good things happen to us so we have to give something good back. I think that people need to think about what it is they can do that only they can do themselves that other people can't for many reasons."
Greg French, spokesperson for Australian Red Cross blood service Mid North Coast, said he hoped to see a spike in donations this week.
"This year especially we're recognising the achievements of 6,000 milestone donors, being donors who regularly donate blood each year," he said. "One in three of us will need donated blood in our lifetime. In Port Macquarie we still need 80 new donors this week to fill all available appointments."
