THE NSW government has made a planning decision that is extremely unpopular with the residents of Port Macquarie.

After several meetings, it was clear that Port Macquarie residents did not want or need this big new development. But the NSW government ignored the Port Macquarie community and went ahead with their plans.
As a result, Woolworths will obtain public land at the site of the Short Street car park for the construction of yet another supermarket complex.
Residents feel that there are enough supermarkets in town already and adding one more merely creates a traffic hazard. There is a Coles supermarket one block away, as well as two IGAs within a kilometre.
Since car parking is in short supply, not supermarkets, they would prefer the site remain as it is, a car park. The Short street car park borders on the river and provides parking for the cafes and restaurants nearby.
It is also the place where the iconic Ironman event is organised. Unfortunately, the local member for Port Macquarie, Leslie Williams, has not sided with the community on this issue.
Voters are now fully aware that Ms Williams, a member of the National Party, who they elected in good faith, has ignored basic planning principles.
Why has this travesty occurred in the face of public opinion and strong community opposition?
Those concerned about Woolworths dominating our public land, and those concerned with local control being overridden and whisked away by the Liberal-National NSW government, should sign the petition.
