The long-awaited upgrade consists of a mound slide, four swing sets, timber balance beams and steppers, a sandpit, welcoming entry signage, artwork and an upgraded climbing net.
Bonny Hills Progress Association was instrumental in helping plan the upgrade and implementing the work with Port Macquarie-Hastings mayor Peter Besseling saying it was an example of what could be achieved "when we work together".
"Students from Lake Cathie Public School have even left a permanent mark on the playground by decorating the pathway with hand prints and coloured stones," he said.
Cr Besseling said the end result was something the whole community could be proud of, while progress association president Roger Barlow congratulated the council on their collaborative approach.
"Community pride in and ownership of the playground has been greatly enhanced as a result," he said.
"As simple as the changes have been, they've all had to comply to national safety standards and we had a lot of people who wanted to help from throughout the community."
