Goals to Andy Collins and Matt Broderick set up a 2-1 win at Dixie Park. It should have been 2-0 but the Green Bloods conceded a late consolation goal to the visitors.
Collins, a former striker, got things going in sensational fashion with a 30 metre strike which flew into the goal.
Coach Chris Walsh said he was searching for the ball in the trees behind the field, only to see it had ended up in the back of the net.
Broderick chested in a finish in the second half to wrap up victory. United played the ball out of the backs and down the side of the field, and Broderick finished the move from a top cross.
Walsh looked forward to the Saints clash at Findlay Park.
He wasn't worried about the potential lack of preparation thanks to a long weekend. Walsh said the side used the Tuncurry game as an intense training run.
"That game was better than any training session," he said.
The Saints/United match will be second versus third on the table, and kicks off at 7.45pm.
Port FC went down to Camden Haven Redbacks 1-0 at Laurieton on Thursday.
FC pushed the Redbacks all the way, but just couldn't equalise.
"I thought we created enough chances to put one away," FC keeper Terrance Stafford said.
The competition enters the second round this weekend. With plenty of home matches in the second half, Stafford said getting points on the board was crucial.
"We really need to start picking up points," he said.
"We've got all home matches bar a couple."
