Little's men were behind 1-0 after the first 20, and put into practice the instructions from a stern coach in the first break.
Dave Spence, Andrew Forrester, Callum McManus and Lewis O'Neil found the back of the net for City at the Port Macquarie Hockey Complex.
It wasn't looking good early. City was turning the ball over regularly and Thunder n Lightning had control.
"They weren't playing well," Little said.
"When we started playing back and across the field, it opened it up for us."
Three of City's goals were well-worked. Spence's came from a short corner, but the others were the results of passing moves which involved just about everyone in the team.
"They were really good team goals," Little said.
Little was a pleased man after the match. He said the team had to replicate its second 20 form in the other two periods of the match.
It could be hard for City and the other teams in the competition to find consistency, with a two-week break for Easter.
The break will give City player Simon Thresher to recover from a knee injury. City also missed Henry Ausling and Geoff Matthews on Sunday.
The Wauchope Wolverines had too much bite for Thunder's other side, winning 4-1.
In the women's matches, City had a 5-1 win over Wauchope Warriors.
Tacking Point Omni was way too good for Allstars, winning 9-0.
