Work will start next week on a $5.2 million project to improve access to and from Dunbogan in the event of major flooding.

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council's infrastructure and asset management director Jeffery Sharp described the work as a critical component of council's commitment to improving flood access and evacuation.

"The first stage of the project will start on April 7 and involves raising an 800 metre section of the Dunbogan tip road by up to 1.5 metres in sections and relocating services such as water, sewer and Telstra cables," Mr Sharp said.

"By raising the road level, we will remove low points and provide a constant grade to higher ground from the tip road to Dunbogan bridge."

Camden Haven SES unit controller Paul Burg said the unit was supportive of the project.

"It will give us a lot lower risk route for people at Dunbogan and Camden Head to access back to the Laurieton side in the event of a required evacuation," he said.

"Generally speaking, it will put it well and truly above the minor flood level."

Mr Burg said new estates meant a bigger population.

"It allows for people to self-evacuate [from Dunbogan and Camden Head] a lot easier and means less reliance us," he said. "It makes everyone's jobs easier."

The overall project, in addition to creating a flood access and evacuation road, will improve pedestrian safety and access along The Boulevarde and increase visibility at night thanks to the upgrade of lights to the newest standards.

"Existing water and sewer assets will also be upgraded and 800 metres of the Dunbogan tip road will be sealed," Mr Sharp said.

During this stage, which is expected to be completed by the end of the year, the tip gravel road will be closed, with a detour via Scarborough Way and Camden Head Road.

Work is expected to be complete by late this year, weather permitting.

The next stage of works, along The Boulevarde, is expected to start in June.

"The project is part of the Camden Haven Flood Plain Management Plan, with the main objective of constructing a safer and better quality road for 1:20 year flood events," Mr Sharp said.
