Work is underway which will provide an elevated walkway on the southern side of Lighthouse Road.
Chairman of the Lighthouse Project Committee, Neil Black, said a walkway had been a concern with local residents for some time.
"The highest priority for local residents way back in 2011 was a safe pathway because anyone walking from their houses to the Lighthouse has to walk on the road," he said.
"We've gone as far as we can go for now, but we wouldn't have gotten to this point without the help of the council."
The project is part of the Tacking Point Lighthouse Reserve master plan and includes a 30-metre concrete path adjoining the existing concrete path.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Mayor, Peter Besseling, said the boardwalk would improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists in the area as well as providing ample viewing opportunities south across Lighthouse Beach.
"Rotary have been behind it from the start and it's been a work in progress for a long time," he said.
Throughout the next four weeks traffic will be reduced to a single lane which is being controlled via automatic traffic signals. It may mean a slight delay for motorists while work is being carried out, but traffic will return to a two-way flow at the end of each day.
Works are jointly funded between council and Sunrise Rotary with a total project budget of about $100,000.
