Kirkman took victory at the Brightside Cover Pro-Am at Castle Hill Golf Club on Tuesday after the second day was abandoned due to bad weather.
He was leading the pack after carding a five under 67 on Monday. Kirkman had eight holes left to play when storms put an end to the tournament.
Play was suspended firstly at about 2pm and then again at about 5pm.
While golf is often a nerve-wracking sport, Kirkman wasn't the most rattled while swinging a club on Tuesday.
He had a close call with lightning after the players had been called back in. It struck nearby before Kirkman could get back to the safety of the clubhouse.
"It was outrageous," he said.
"A pretty big strike. As soon as it hit, it was all noise. "It was only about 50 metres from the clubhouse."
It was a far cry from the perfect conditions on day one. Kirkman described the weather as "beautiful."
His play on the first day had been as electric as the storm on the second. Kirkman's round included six birdies as he went two shots clear.
He was pleased with his play on a couple of par threes which were surrounded by lots of water, on a course which Kirkman described as similar to Port Macquarie's.
"I hit a couple of good shots there," he said.
"There was a bit more water on that course, and a hell of a lot more bunkers."
It wasn't a bad result considering Kirkman got his first proper look at the course on the Sunday when he played the front nine.
Kirkman's next event on the tour is in Goulburn, starting on April 13. He will then head to Canberra for six events.
The Castle Hill event was just his fifth on the tour.
