To celebrate International Women’s Day, Mrs Bishop shared the story of her rise through the halls of parliament to become the longest serving woman in Australian politics.
At 16 she decided her path and fought relentlessly to earn her place because she knew “it could be done”.
“What little girls need to learn early is that what you want is respect, not to be liked. To achieve and to lead is tough,” she said.
“If given authority and power you must exercise it. If you don’t exercise it, it will disappear. You want respect and you want to do the best job you can.
“By growing tall poppies, we provide inspiration and leadership and women’s voices will be heard.”
