The state of the art facility at Port Macquarie Base Hospital is on track to open mid-year and offer diagnostic coronary angiograms in its first 12 months.
The cath lab will make life easier for those patients who will no longer have to go to Sydney or Newcastle for a coronary angiogram.
Instead they will be able to remain close to their loved ones in more familiar surroundings during what can already be an overwhelming time.
The procedure can take as little as 20 minutes if it turns out to be a straightforward case.
Only diagnostic coronary angiograms will be performed in the cath lab’s first 12 months but that is a necessary step towards the introduction of an interventional service.
