THE drugs scandal enveloping the National Rugby League is a threat the game can ill afford, according to a couple of former first graders who were in Port Macquarie on Friday.

Brad Fittler and Ian Schubert spoke to the Port News about the issue while in town for the Hogs for the Homeless charity ride at Port Macquarie Base Hospital's Paediatric Unit.
Both Fittler and Schubert who was born in Comboyne were reluctant to delve into the issue, but agreed it was a blight on the game. Roosters legend Fittler preferred to talk about his former team's upcoming season. He just hoped the game wasn't too hurt by the drugs issue.
"There's other people who look after that," he said.
"We're just doing what we're doing. Hopefully it can be cleared up before the season starts, with as little amount of damage to the game, and the people, as possible."
Schubert, the former NRL salary cap auditor and Rooster, was similarly careful in talking about the issue.
"It's not an easy matter to handle and it's very complex.
"Everything that damages the game hurts a lot. It's very hard to heal a scar."
Schubert was disappointed not to get to his former town's show during his visit.
"It's a shame they haven't got tar on the other side of the mountain we would have gone up and over," he said.
"I went to a few [shows]."
The pair joined former Parramatta Eel Nathan Hindmarsh, St George Illawarra Dragon Matt Cooper and Manly Sea Eagle Steve Menzies on Harleys on the 3200 kilometre trek for the Youth off the Streets charity.
From Port they travelled to Gloucester for a footy clinic.
Fittler looked forward to eyeing off some of the talent from that town's kids.
"I think they worked out that the more you give out the more luck you seem to get," he said.
He hoped there was a future Blake Ferguson in there. Ferguson will make his Roosters debut this year.
"Fergo's coming on good," Fittler said.
He pinpointed the centres as the Roosters' keys to success.
"Centres I think are the position," Fittler said.
