But meteorologist Kim Westcott warned that, while the rain may slow until Wednesday, storms are on the way.
“Sunday’s rain will ease back overnight into Monday,” Ms Westcott said. “You’re looking at showers for the next few (days), and possible thunderstorms on Thursday and Friday.”
Things started slowly on Christmas Day with 8.4 millimetres falling in the 24 hours to Friday 9am. But the drenching began in earnest on Boxing Day with 22.6 mm of solid rain.
Another 22.2 mm fell in the 24 hours until Sunday 9am, but the most significant shellacking came during the day yesterday
A staggering 23 mm was recorded in Port Macquarie from 9am to 5pm, which Ms Westcott said was “the last of the heavy stuff for a while”.
The rain has been the result of a low pressure trough moving across NSW, which was directly over the Mid-North Coast on the weekend.
“It’s been from the Mid-North Coast to south-east Queensland and will start to shift north on Monday,” Ms Westcott said. “And the rain will ease as a result.”
Showers yielding between one and five mm are expected for the next few days before the thunder arrives on Thursday.
“There’s another low pressure trough expected which will create instability later in the week,” Ms Westcott said. “That should see some big storms heading your way.”
The meteoroligst added such weather was not unusual for this time of year and is “especially helpful heading into the hotter months to get some relief.”
