After being voted out twice by Group 3, the Mustangs have turned to the Country Rugby League in the hope that the organisation can assist in finding a solution.
Chief executive officer of the CRL, Terry Quinn said there was the possibility of approaching Group 3 to see if they would allow under 18s and women's league tag teams to compete in the competition.
But secretary of the Mustangs Bruce Cain said it wouldn't be a viable option.
"It just wouldn't work," he said.
"We need both our senior teams playing as well.
"It wouldn't work we would run at a big loss."
He said the club would prefer to explore the option of re-joining Group 2.
Quinn had his reservations about the idea but said nothing would be done until the New Year.
"You have to remember they were kicked out of that competition," he said. "It might not be that easy and there have been recent boundary changes to include Grafton which will need to be taken into account."
Cain said the club was hoping for a decision as soon as possible and each day that went by that they were not part of a competition was hurting the club.
"It's been very difficult, we've started to lose some players to other teams," he said.
"But we have a great junior nursery coming through the 18s that is enticing to see.
"We have a good production line of talent.
"But everyone has been left in limbo as well, as long as this goes on the worse off we become with player retention and finding coaches."
