The event was hotly contested with two players returning net scores of 67 and another three with 68.
Full hams were won by the players with the best net score over the field and the best net score in each grade. Smaller ham prizes then went to the next 11 best in each grade and finally puddings and wine down to 21st place in each grade.
The best net score over the field was 66 and a countback was needed to separate Bill Gates and Mick Couper. The two were playing off the same handicap of 11 but they had contrasting cards. Couper, who had a horrible start, had 43 out and 34 home, while Gates was three over par for each nine holes.
Following a triple bogey at the third hole and a double bogey at the fourth Couper was six over par from the first four holes. However he was very solid from there on and finished his round still at six over par. He had four birdies in his round and played the four par threes in just nine shots.
Gates was less spectacular but very solid with just one birdie and one double bogey in his round. His double bogey came at the twelfth hole and his birdie at the very next hole.
Couper won the prize for the best net score of the day and Gates the one for the best A grade score. The ham prizes in A grade went down to 70 on a countback and the other A grade prizes went to 71 on a countback.
In B grade Mark Moore had 41 out and 42 home to return the winning net score of 67. He had birdies at the fourth and fifth holes but double bogeyed the third and 14th holes. He finished one ahead of Tim Gwyther and Ken Wilson. Although he had a double bogey at the last hole Gwyther was solid throughout.
In contrast Wilson had a few holes that he would like to forget. He had a triple bogey at the 7th and then had consecutive double bogeys at the 11th and 12th holes.
The ham prizes in B grade went down to 71 on a countback and the other prizes to 72 on a countback.
A countback was needed to separate good friends Bob Jones and Peter McFarland for the major prize in C grade. They both had horrible front nines and great back nines. Jones, who won the countback, had 53 out and 42 home from his handicap of 27. McFarland, whose handicap is 22, had 48 out and then came home in 42. He had a terrible start being nine over par after four holes.
Net 72 with a good countback was needed to win ham in C grade while the puddings and wine went down to 73 net.
Dale Murray, Barry McLaren, Bill Gates and Col Lucas won the nearest to the pins.
