Smurthwaite knocked over Jacques Hill, Marty Haynes and Ashok Shanaw to achieve the remarkable feat and help restrict the Dogs to just 85 at Wayne Richards Park.
Macquarie passed the total six wickets down.
Smurthwaite produced 3-17 from eight overs in a great display of bowling. He had Hill caught by Martin Bennett, before cleaning up Haynes' castle.
Keeper Mick Easton took a superb diving catch on the third ball to seal the hat-trick.
Phil Crouch smashed an unbeaten 159 for the Lake Cathie Taverners as they easily accounted for Port City Leagues Magpies in second grade.
Crouch's knock helped the Taverners to 6-261 from their 40 overs, but the Pies could only manage 162 in reply at Laurieton Oval.
Crouch belted the attack to all parts of the ground. His boundaries alone totalled 106 runs. He hit 16 fours and seven sixes.
The star batsman backed up his innings with a good bowling performance. Crouch snared 3-22 from seven overs.
Port Panthers Pirates Mutineers heaped pain on a hapless and short Beechwood side on Saturday in third grade.
The Pirates scored 5-282 before rolling Beechwood for 138.
Pirates captain Paul Munro scored 129, while Tom Vorias made 90.
Jeremy Madden's 38 was the best in Beechwood's innings. Todd Watling chipped in with 25.
